Shubh Vivah Muhurat 2026: How to Choose the Right Wedding Date

Every family that comes to me with a wedding in mind asks the same question first: "Sir, which date is good?" It is a fair question. A marriage is not an event of one evening — it is the beginning of a shared life, and the moment you begin something leaves its imprint on everything that follows.

In my practice I have seen that a well-chosen shubh vivah muhurat does not guarantee a perfect marriage. But it does give the couple a calmer start, and in astrology a calm start matters more than people realise.

What makes a wedding date auspicious?

A muhurat is not a lucky date printed in a calendar. It is a window of time in which the Moon, the tithi, the nakshatra, the yoga and the karana all support the vow being taken. For a marriage I look at four things together:

• The tithi and the day of the week, avoiding the rikta tithis and the periods when Venus or Jupiter is combust or set.
• The nakshatra of the chosen day — Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Moola, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati are traditionally favoured for vivah.
• The Moon's position relative to both the bride's and the groom's Moon, so the day is not emotionally hostile to either of them.
• The running dasha of both partners, because a beautiful day in a difficult dasha is only a beautiful day.

Why the printed 2026 muhurat list is not enough

Every panchang publishes a list of marriage dates for the year. Those dates are calculated for a general public, not for two specific charts. I have often seen couples pick the "best" date from a list only to find that on that very day the bride's Moon is in the eighth from her natal Moon, or that Jupiter is transiting a difficult house for the groom.

A general list tells you when the sky is broadly favourable. Your kundli tells you when the sky is favourable to you. The second one is the one you marry on.

What if no perfect date is available?

This happens often, especially when families are working around leave, visas and venue bookings. My honest answer: a perfect muhurat rarely exists. What exists is the best available window — a date where the essential factors are clean even if the ornamental ones are not.

I would rather a family marry on a good, workable day with a clear mind than postpone for a year chasing perfection. Astrology should reduce anxiety, not manufacture it.
