What If the Kundli Doesn't Match? Can You Still Marry?

Few sentences frighten an Indian family more than "the kundli did not match". I have watched good matches collapse over a number, and I have watched families push ahead against clear warnings. Both extremes come from the same place — not understanding what the matching actually measured.

Let me say the most important thing first: a low score in kundli matching is information, not a verdict.

What does a low guna score actually mean?

The Ashtakoot system gives 36 points across eight koots. Below 18 is conventionally considered weak. But those points are weighted heavily towards nakshatra-based factors — Nadi alone carries 8 and Bhakoot 7. A single mismatch in those two can drag an otherwise healthy match to 15 or 16.

I have seen couples at 17 gunas live in remarkable peace, and couples at 30 struggle badly. The score summarises the meeting of two Moons. It says very little about the seventh house, the dasha periods, or the maturity of the two people involved.

Which mismatches actually matter?

When a score comes out low, the first thing I do is ask where it came from.

• Nadi dosha — serious in principle, but cancelled in several well-documented situations, such as the same rashi with different nakshatras or the same nakshatra with different padas.
• Bhakoot dosha — affects emotional rhythm and finances; also has recognised cancellations when the lords of the two rashis are friendly.
• Manglik / Mangal dosha — often overstated. Its strength depends on the house, the sign and whether Mars is aspected by benefics.
• Gana or Yoni mismatch — points to temperament differences. Real, but workable in adults who communicate.

Two-thirds of the "failed" matches I review turn out to have a valid cancellation nobody checked.

When do I honestly advise caution?

I do not believe in telling people what they want to hear. I advise real caution when the seventh house and its lord are afflicted in both charts, when the dasha sequence of the coming ten years is difficult for both partners at once, or when longevity and health factors are clearly disturbed. Those are chart-level problems, not score-level ones — and no remedy replaces honest conversation between the two families.

So what should you do?

Do not accept a one-line verdict from an app. Get the full chart read — the seventh house, Venus, Jupiter, the Moon and the running dasha — and then decide as adults.
