A boy''s horoscope is shown to a pandit, the word is spoken, and suddenly a family that was ready to fix a wedding wants to call everything off. I have watched this happen more times than I can count, and in most of those cases the fear was far bigger than the actual planetary condition.

Let me tell you honestly what this dosha is and how much weight it deserves in a marriage decision.

What is Kaal Sarp Dosh in a kundli?

Kaal Sarp Dosh is formed when all seven visible planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. The chart looks squeezed, as if the whole life force is held between the head and tail of the serpent.

That is the entire definition. Nothing more dramatic than that.

There are twelve named varieties depending on where Rahu sits — Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Takshak and so on — and each is said to press on a different area of life. But the classical texts that people quote so confidently give this yoga far less space than modern astrologers do.

Does Kaal Sarp Dosh really delay or damage marriage?

In my practice, here is the honest pattern. Kaal Sarp Dosh, on its own, does not break marriages. What it does is intensify the chart. Everything feels a little more extreme — more waiting, more sudden turns, more of that feeling that life moves in jumps rather than in a straight line.

Marriage is genuinely affected only when two more conditions appear along with it:

• Rahu or Ketu sits in or aspects the 7th house, the house of partnership.
• The 7th lord or Venus is weak, combust or afflicted at the same time.

When those overlap, yes — I do see delayed marriage, engagements that break once before the right one holds, or a partner who comes from a very different background. When they do not overlap, the dosha usually shows up in career restlessness or health, not in married life at all.

I have read charts of extremely successful, happily married public figures that carry a textbook Kaal Sarp formation. Sachin Tendulkar''s chart is often quoted in this discussion. A yoga that is present in millions of horoscopes cannot logically be a curse.

How much should it weigh in kundli matching?

Very little on its own. When I do kundli matching, Kaal Sarp Dosh is roughly the eighth or ninth thing I look at — after the lagna, the 7th house and its lord, Venus and Mars, the Navamsa, the running dasha, and the Mangal position.

If a family tells me "the boy is good, the family is good, but he has Kaal Sarp", my first question is always: what else does the chart say? A single label should never decide a life.

Also remember — this dosha exists in one chart, not between two charts. It is not a compatibility factor in the way Nadi or Bhakoot are.

What remedies actually help?

I am careful here, because Kaal Sarp is one of the most commercially exploited words in Indian astrology. Families are pushed into expensive pujas at pilgrimage towns out of pure fear. That is not astrology; that is a business built on anxiety.

The traditional remedies that I do recommend are simple, personal and inexpensive:

• Offering water to a Shivling on Mondays, with a quiet Om Namah Shivaya.
• The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, done regularly rather than dramatically.
• Feeding or caring for animals, especially on Saturdays.
• Serving elders in the family — Rahu-Ketu karma is very often family karma.

If a Naag Panchami or Kaal Sarp shanti is performed at home with sincerity, that is enough. You do not need to be frightened into anything.

I tell them the truth: a dosha is a description, not a sentence. It tells you the texture of your life, not its ending. I have seen couples with clean charts fight bitterly, and couples with three "doshas" between them build homes full of peace, because they were honest, patient and willing to work.
