Choosing the Right Muhurat for a Blessed Wedding

Choosing your wedding date is more than a formality. I explain how a shubh vivah muhurat is calculated, and what it can and cannot promise a couple.

A wedding day is one of the most significant days two families will ever share, and yet in the rush of venues, outfits, and guest lists, the actual timing of the ceremony is often decided last. In Vedic tradition, we believe this is backwards — the muhurat, or auspicious time, is one of the first things that should be fixed.

What exactly is a wedding muhurat?

A shubh vivah muhurat is a specific date and time calculated using the positions of the Moon, the tithi (lunar day), the nakshatra (birth star), and various planetary combinations. The idea is simple: just as we choose the right season to sow a seed for it to grow well, we choose a time that supports the beginning of a marriage so it has the best possible start.

How is a muhurat actually calculated?

I look at several factors together rather than any single one in isolation.

  • The tithi (lunar day) — certain tithis are considered more favourable for new beginnings
  • The nakshatra of the day, and how it relates to both partners' birth nakshatras
  • The position of Jupiter and Venus, the two planets most closely tied to marriage and relationships
  • Avoiding periods like Rahu Kaal or inauspicious yogas on that date

Does the muhurat guarantee a happy marriage?

I want to be very clear with couples on this point: a good muhurat is a blessing and a supportive start, not a guarantee. A marriage is sustained by the everyday choices two people make — honesty, patience, and mutual respect — far more than by any single hour on the calendar. I have seen marriages that began on a beautifully chosen date still require real effort from both partners, and I have seen couples married in less-than-ideal timing build genuinely happy lives together through sheer commitment.

What I do believe, in the traditional sense, is that starting an important life event at a time when supportive planetary energies are present can make the early years a little smoother. It is one input among many, not a magic formula.

Can every date work if the couple is truly compatible?

Not every date suits every couple. Even within a season generally considered good for weddings, the specific date should ideally be checked against both partners' charts. What is a wonderful date for one couple may not carry the same supportive energy for another, simply because everyone's kundli is different.

I always tell families planning a wedding to start this conversation early — ideally months in advance — so there is enough flexibility to choose a date that works both astrologically and practically for the venue, families, and travel logistics.

If you are in the process of planning your wedding and would like your muhurat calculated properly, taking into account both partners' birth details, I would be glad to help.
