Planning a Wedding Around Planetary Positions
Jupiter, Venus, and combust periods shape which months suit a wedding. I explain how planetary positions guide wedding planning, and where flexibility remains.
Wedding planning usually starts with a venue and a guest list, but in many Indian households, there is a quieter, earlier question that shapes everything else: which months, and which specific dates, are the planets actually supporting a wedding this year?
Why do planetary positions matter for wedding planning?
In Vedic astrology, certain planets are considered especially significant for marriage — Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra) chief among them. Jupiter is associated with wisdom, growth, and marital happiness, while Venus governs love, romance, and harmony between partners. When these two planets are in a combust state (too close to the Sun) or in retrograde motion, that period is traditionally considered less favourable for beginning new marriages.
What is "Guru Chandal Dosh" and why do people mention it around weddings?
You may have heard elders mention avoiding weddings during certain months because Jupiter is combust, or because of what is sometimes called Guru Chandal dosh — when Jupiter and Rahu are closely conjunct. This is one of the reasons certain months in a year are traditionally avoided for weddings across many Hindu households, regardless of individual charts.
Beyond these broad periods, what should a specific couple look at?
Broad calendar restrictions are only the first filter. Once we are past the generally avoided periods, I look closely at the two individuals' specific charts:
- The Moon's position and nakshatra on the proposed date, matched against both partners' birth Moon signs
- Whether Venus and Jupiter are in supportive positions relative to each partner's seventh house (marriage house)
- Any major planetary period (dasha) either partner is currently running through, and how it interacts with the chosen date
Does this mean some months are simply "off-limits" for everyone?
Broadly, yes — there are certain windows each year that are traditionally avoided by many families for new weddings, largely tied to Jupiter's movement. But I always remind couples that these general guidelines are a starting filter, not the final word. A date that suits the wider tradition may still need fine adjustment for your specific charts, and vice versa — with the right planning, some flexibility is often possible.
I have often seen couples get quite anxious trying to find a "perfect" date that satisfies every single condition. In reality, no date is perfect on every count. My role is to help you find a date that is genuinely supportive on the factors that matter most for your two charts specifically, while being transparent about the ones that are simply less than ideal but manageable.
Ultimately, planetary timing is meant to support your wedding, not add stress to an already busy planning process. If you would like help finding dates this year or next that suit both the broader calendar and your personal charts, I would be glad to walk you through it.
