Guna Milan Explained: What Your 36-Point Score Really Means

Dr. Rahul Singh explains Guna Milan and the 36-point compatibility score, what it measures, how it's calculated, and why the number alone isn't everything.

Few things bring as much anxiety to Indian families as waiting for the Guna Milan score after a proposed match has been sent for kundli matching. I understand why the number feels so important to everyone involved, but I always tell families that understanding what the score actually means matters far more than the number itself sitting on a page.

What is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan, also known as Ashtakoot Milan, is a traditional method of comparing two birth charts across eight specific categories, or kootas, to assess compatibility between prospective partners. It considers factors like temperament, health, physical compatibility, mental harmony, and the potential for children, based primarily on the position of the Moon and its nakshatra in each person's chart.

How is the 36-point score calculated?

The system assigns points across eight kootas: Varna (1 point), Vashya (2 points), Tara (3 points), Yoni (4 points), Graha Maitri (5 points), Gana (6 points), Bhakoot (7 points), and Nadi (8 points), adding up to a maximum possible total of 36. Each koota examines a different dimension of compatibility, from basic temperament to deeper questions of health and progeny, and the final score is simply the sum of points earned across all eight categories together.

What score should you aim for?

Traditionally, a score of 18 or above out of 36 is considered the minimum acceptable threshold, while scores above 24 to 25 are seen as good, and anything above 30 is considered excellent by most traditional standards. But, and I say this to every family I consult with, the total number alone is not the whole story. A high score alongside a Nadi dosha, meaning zero points in the Nadi koota, still needs careful individual examination, and a slightly lower score with otherwise strong indicators can still support a genuinely happy marriage.

I have often seen couples where the numerical score was only decent on paper, yet the overall charts, when studied together beyond just Guna Milan, including the 7th house, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars positions, showed a genuinely compatible and supportive relationship between the two people.

Reading the score honestly

My responsibility as an astrologer is never to let a single number alone decide something as significant as a marriage. Guna Milan is a valuable, time-tested tool, but it works best as one part of a fuller reading that also includes manglik dosha checks and the broader strength of both individual charts side by side.

If you have a Guna Milan report and want to understand what it truly means for your situation, I invite you to a confidential consultation with me, Dr. Rahul Singh, where we will go through it together, honestly and carefully.
