Grah Shanti and Pre-Wedding Remedies: What They Involve

Grah shanti rituals are common before weddings when a dosha is found. I explain what these pre-wedding remedies involve, and what they can honestly offer.

Many families come to me not before the wedding date is fixed, but after — once a matching of charts has revealed some friction between the couple, or once one partner's chart shows a dosha that concerns the elders in the family. This is where the conversation about grah shanti usually begins.

What is grah shanti, exactly?

Grah shanti literally means "pacifying the planets." In Vedic astrology, it is believed that when certain planets are placed in a way that creates stress in a chart — for example, an afflicted Mars, Saturn, or Rahu — specific rituals, mantras, and charitable acts can help ease that stress before an important life event like marriage.

What do these pre-wedding remedies typically involve?

Remedies vary depending on which planet needs pacifying and how the family's tradition is practiced, but commonly include:

  • Chanting specific mantras dedicated to the concerned planet
  • Simple pujas performed with a qualified priest, often at home or a temple
  • Charitable acts such as donating items associated with a planet, often on a particular day of the week
  • Wearing a recommended gemstone, only after proper chart analysis — never as a generic suggestion
  • In cases of Mangal dosha, a symbolic ritual sometimes performed before the actual wedding

Is grah shanti only for doshas like Manglik?

Mangal dosha (also called Manglik dosha) is the most commonly discussed reason people seek grah shanti before marriage, but it is not the only one. Afflictions involving Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu in the seventh house — the house of marriage and partnership — can also prompt families to perform some form of pacification before the wedding.

Do these remedies guarantee a smooth marriage?

I have to be honest with you: no remedy, however sincerely performed, can replace the actual work of building a relationship. What grah shanti offers, in the traditional understanding, is a way to approach a challenging chart with humility and positive intention, easing anxiety and creating a sense of readiness within the family.

I have often seen families feel genuinely more at peace after performing these rituals — not because the planets have been magically altered, but because the process itself brings clarity, ritual comfort, and a shared sense of having done their best with sincerity. That peace of mind matters, and I never dismiss it.

I would also caution against remedies suggested without a proper chart reading first. I have met people who were told to wear a particular stone or fast on a particular day by someone who had never even looked at their kundli. That is not how ethical practice works. Any remedy should follow a genuine reading of your specific chart, not a one-size-fits-all prescription.

If your family is preparing for a wedding and has concerns about doshas or planetary afflictions, I would recommend a proper kundli analysis before deciding on any remedy.
