Difficult Periods in a Marriage: What a Horoscope Really Shows
Every marriage passes through strained phases. Here is how a kundli shows those periods, when they usually pass, and what steadies a home while they last.
Quick answer
Vedic astrology identifies difficult periods in a marriage by analyzing planetary transits and dashas affecting the seventh house, its lord, and Venus. These horoscopic cycles reveal when external pressures, emotional distance, or conflict will peak and, crucially, when they will subside. Understanding these specific timelines allows couples to distinguish between temporary planetary influences and permanent structural issues within their relationship.

Every marriage passes through a difficult phase. Nobody says this at the wedding, but it is true of the happiest homes I have seen. What worries people is not the difficulty itself — it is not knowing whether it will pass.
This is exactly where a horoscope helps. The chart shows which years place pressure on a marriage, where that pressure comes from, and when it is likely to ease.
Which planets show a strained period in marriage?
I look at the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the Moon, and then at what is currently touching them:
- Saturn transiting the 7th house or the natal Moon. This brings coldness, distance and heavy responsibility. Sade Sati often coincides with the quietest years of a marriage.
- Mars over the 7th house, which raises the temperature of ordinary conversations for a few weeks at a time.
- Rahu influencing the 7th, bringing restlessness, suspicion and a sense that something is missing.
- A weak Moon period, where small remarks land far harder than they should.
- The 6th house lord's dasha, in which conflict simply looks for a subject.
None of these are permanent. Every one of them has a start date and an end date, and that is the most reassuring thing an astrologer can offer.
Does a difficult phase mean the marriage is wrong?
In my experience, no. I have often seen two couples pass through the same transit with completely different outcomes. One treated the strain as proof that the match was a mistake. The other understood the period, lowered the pressure at home, and came out closer than before.
The planets describe the weather. They do not decide whether you take shelter.
How long do these periods usually last?
It depends on the planet:
- Mars transits are short — a few weeks, and they repeat.
- Saturn's influence is long and slow, often two to three years, but it teaches patience and usually leaves the marriage more grounded.
- Rahu and Ketu periods run about eighteen months in a house and settle once they move on.
- A dasha change can shift the whole tone of a household within months.
Knowing which of these you are in changes how you respond. You can begin by generating your chart on our kundli page.
What steadies a home during a hard phase?
- Do not take permanent decisions in a temporary period. This is the single most important thing I tell clients.
- Strengthen the Moon — regular sleep, routine, and Monday discipline. A settled mind absorbs far more.
- Keep the argument between the two of you, without drawing in relatives.
- Choose your timing for serious conversations; avoid heated transits and late nights.
- Seek honest counselling early. In my view that is part of an astrologer's duty, not something separate from it.
An honest word
Astrology cannot promise that every marriage will survive every difficulty, and I never make such guarantees. What it can do is tell you whether the pressure you feel is a passing planetary phase or a long-standing pattern in the chart — and those two situations deserve very different responses.
If your home is going through a hard stretch, bring both charts and let us read the period calmly and privately. You can book a consultation and we will look at what is actually running, and when it lifts.
