Darakaraka: The Planet That Quietly Describes Your Future Spouse

Almost every person who sits in front of me eventually asks the same question in some form: "What kind of person will I marry?" It is one of the most human questions there is. Vedic astrology has more than one way of answering it, and one of the most elegant answers comes from the Jaimini system — the Darakaraka.

I have used this technique for years, and I will say this openly: it is remarkably descriptive when it is read carefully, and completely misleading when it is read casually.

What is the Darakaraka in a kundli?

In Jaimini astrology, the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn are ranked by the exact degree they occupy in your chart. The planet with the lowest degree becomes the Darakaraka — the significator of the spouse. "Dara" means spouse; "karaka" means the one who signifies.

So while the 7th house shows the marriage as an event and a relationship, the Darakaraka points at the person. It colours their temperament, their background, sometimes even the way they walk into your life.

What can it actually tell you?

A Venus Darakaraka often points to a partner who values beauty, comfort and harmony. A Saturn Darakaraka usually brings someone serious, older in outlook, dependable, sometimes emotionally reserved. A Jupiter Darakaraka tends to give a partner with values, learning or a teaching temperament. Mars gives energy and directness; Mercury gives wit, talk and youthfulness; the Sun gives authority and pride; the Moon gives sensitivity and mood.

I have often seen charts where the Darakaraka described the spouse better than the 7th house did — particularly the nature of the person, rather than the shape of the marriage.

Where people go wrong with it

Here is my honest caution. A Darakaraka is not a personality certificate. The sign it sits in, the house it occupies, the planets aspecting it, and its position in the Navamsa chart all change the reading substantially. Saturn as Darakaraka in a friendly sign with Jupiter's aspect is a very different spouse from Saturn afflicted and debilitated.

And no chart tells you the person's name, their photograph or their city. Anyone who claims that is selling something.

I read the Darakaraka alongside the 7th house, the 7th lord, Venus, and the D9 chart. When all of them point in the same direction, the description becomes reliable enough to be genuinely useful — not as a fantasy, but as preparation. It helps a person recognise a good match when it appears, instead of walking past it.
