Ashtakoot Milan: The Eight Kootas That Shape Compatibility

Dr. Rahul Singh breaks down the eight kootas of Ashtakoot Milan, from Varna to Nadi, and explains how to read a compatibility report beyond the final score.

Whenever I sit down with a Guna Milan report for a family, I like to walk them through each of the eight kootas individually rather than jumping straight to the final number at the bottom of the page. Each koota tells its own small story about compatibility, and together they build a much richer picture than the total score alone ever could.

What are the eight kootas?

Ashtakoot Milan examines eight specific dimensions between two birth charts, based primarily on the Moon's nakshatra at birth:

  • Varna (1 point) - spiritual and temperamental compatibility
  • Vashya (2 points) - mutual attraction and influence within the relationship
  • Tara (3 points) - general wellbeing and destiny compatibility
  • Yoni (4 points) - physical and instinctive compatibility
  • Graha Maitri (5 points) - mental compatibility and friendship between the ruling planets of both Moon signs
  • Gana (6 points) - nature and temperament, categorised as deva, manushya, or rakshasa
  • Bhakoot (7 points) - emotional and financial harmony between the two Moon signs
  • Nadi (8 points) - health and progeny compatibility

Which koota carries the most weight?

Nadi carries the highest weight at 8 points, followed closely by Bhakoot koota at 7 points, which is why these two are studied with special care rather than simply added into the running total. A zero in the Nadi koota, called Nadi dosha, is traditionally treated as a matter needing individual examination regardless of how strong the rest of the score is, since it traditionally relates to health and childbearing harmony between the couple involved.

Similarly, a zero in Bhakoot, known as Bhakoot dosha, is looked at closely for its bearing on emotional and financial stability within the marriage, though both doshas can sometimes be softened by other strong factors present in the two charts, such as favourable planetary placements or supportive yogas elsewhere.

How should couples read their Ashtakoot report?

I always tell couples and families not to fixate only on the final number out of 36. Look at which kootas scored well and which did not, and understand what each one is actually describing about your compatibility as a pair. I have often seen matches where a lower score in one koota was balanced beautifully by real understanding and effort between two people once they were actually married, since astrology describes tendencies, not unchangeable outcomes carved in stone.

Bringing the kootas together

A thoughtful reading of Ashtakoot Milan combines the koota-by-koota detail with the couple's individual charts, their 7th houses, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars placements, to give an honest, complete picture rather than a single score to celebrate or fear in isolation.

If you have received a Guna Milan report and would like to understand each koota in detail for your own match, I welcome you to a confidential consultation with me, Dr. Rahul Singh, at Daivagya.
